A New pH Indicator Based on 2,5‐Diaryl‐1‐salicylideneamino‐1,3,4‐triazole Derivative

2‐Phenyl‐5‐p‐tolyl‐1‐salicylideneamino‐1,3,4‐triazole (PTST) was studied among 2,5‐diaryl‐1‐salicylidene amino‐1,3,4‐triazole derivatives as a novel potential pH indicator. In terms of absorption intensity coming from the acid‐base reactions, PTST showed strong yellow‐green colour with high extinction coefficient in the pH range 7.0–9.5. In addition, the corresponding colour development at the transition point can be attributed to the resonance structures of PTST, which were caused by the hydrogen ion dissociation from the acidic form of the compound in the presence of alkali. The full geometric optimization and achievement of the electronic structure of the molecule were performed by an AM1 semiempirical method. The triazole compound was compared with phenolphthalein (PT), which is widely used as an acid‐base indicator in titrimetry, for accuracy test.     

Synthesis of Schiff and Mannich bases of isatin derivatives with 4-amino-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-ones

Ethyl imidate hydrochlorides 1 were prepared by passing HCl gas through solutions of substituted benzyl cyanides and absolute ethanol. Ethoxycarbonylhydrazones 2 were synthesized from the reaction of compounds 1 with ethyl carbazate. Treatment of 2 with hydrazine hydrate leads to the formation of substituted 4-amino-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-ones 3. Isatin and 5-chloroisatin were added to 3 to form Schiff bases 4 and N-Mannich bases 5 of these compounds were synthesized by reacting with formaldehyde and piperidine. Their chemical structures were confirmed by means of IR, (1)H- and (13)C-NMR data and by elemental analysis.     

A Tate cohomology sequence for generalized Burnside rings

We generalize the fundamental theorem for Burnside rings to the mark morphism of plus constructions defined by Boltje. The main observation is the following: If D is a restriction functor for a finite group G, then the mark morphism φ:D₊→D⁺ is the same as the norm map of the Tate cohomology sequence (over conjugation algebra for G) after composing with a suitable isomorphism of D⁺. As a consequence, we obtain an exact sequence of Mackey functors

     

Carrier element-free coprecipitation (CEFC) method for the separation, preconcentration and speciation of chromium using an isatin derivative

A new, simple, rapid and sensitive separation, preconcentration and speciation procedure for chromium in environmental liquid and solid samples has been established. The present speciation procedure for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) is based on combination of carrier element-free coprecipitation (CEFC) and flame atomic absorption spectrometric (FAAS) determinations. In this method a newly synthesized organic coprecipitant, 5-chloro-3-[4-(trifluoromethoxy) phenylimino]indolin-2-one (CFMEPI), was used without adding any carrier element for coprecipitation of chromium(III). After reduction of chromium(VI) by concentrated H₂SO₄ and ethanol, the procedure was applied for the determination of total chromium. Chromium(VI) was calculated as the difference between the amount of total chromium and chromium(III). The optimum conditions for coprecipitation and speciation processes were investigated on several commonly tested experimental parameters, such as pH of the solution, amount of coprecipitant, sample volume, etc. No considerable interference was observed from the other investigated anions and cations, which may be found in natural water samples. The preconcentration factor was found to be 40. The detection limit for chromium(III) corresponding to three times the standard deviation of the blank (N = 10) was found 0.7 μg L⁻¹. The present procedure was successfully applied for speciation of chromium in several liquid and solid environmental samples. In order to support the accuracy of the method, the certified reference materials (CRM-TMDW-500 Drinking Water and CRM-SA-C Sandy Soil C) were analyzed, and standard APDC-MIBK liquid-liquid extraction method was performed. The results obtained were in good agreement with the certified values.     

Bayes estimation in a mixture inverse Gaussian model

In this paper a mixture model involving the inverse Gaussian distribution and its length biased version is studied from a Bayesian view-point. Using proper priors, the Bayes estimates of the parameters of the model are derived and the results are applied on the aircraft data of Proschan (1963,Technometrics,5, 375–383). The posterior distributions of the parameters are expressed in terms of the confluent-hypergeometric function and the modified Bessel function of the third kind. The integral involved in the expression of the estimate of the mean is evaluated by numerical techniques.     

Synthesis of Highly Functionalized γ‐Lactones via 1,5‐Electrocyclic Ring Closure

We have investigated 1,5‐electrocyclic ring‐closure reactions of conjugated esters with dimethyl diazomalonate in the presence of [Cu(acac)₂] as catalyst. Our new protocol offers an easy entry to various polyfunctionalized γ‐lactones in high yields. Their subsequent derivatives may be used as valuable intermediates, especially in the synthesis of natural products and their analogues.     

Diazoaldehyde Chemistry. Part 3. Synthesis of 4-acyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole derivatives

Ten new α-diazo-β-oxoaldehydes were condensed with aniline, ammonia, hydroxylamine, and semicarbazide to yield new 4-acyl-(1-substituted)-1H-1,2,3-triazoles in moderate-to-good yields. The method is simple and regiospecific. The latter feature makes this method superior to the widely used acylacetylene + azide approach.
